Rainy Season Prep for Eugene Homes

5 min read

Eugene's rainy season runs from roughly October through May — that's seven months of significant precipitation. Homes that aren't prepared before the rains arrive pay for it. Here's what to do before October.

Exterior checklist

  • Clean gutters completely — remove all debris, flush with water to verify drainage
  • Check all downspouts extend at least 6 feet from the foundation
  • Inspect roof for missing, cracked, or lifting shingles
  • Check roof flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vents
  • Caulk any gaps in exterior trim, window frames, and door frames
  • Check that soil and landscaping slope away from the foundation
  • Trim back any branches that overhang or touch the roof
  • Inspect and clear crawl space vents — blocked vents trap moisture

Interior checklist

  • Check attic for any signs of moisture staining or existing leaks
  • Inspect crawl space vapor barrier — repair any tears or gaps
  • Test sump pump if installed — pour water into the pit to verify it activates
  • Check weatherstripping on all exterior doors
  • Inspect window seals — condensation between panes means failed seals
  • Service furnace and replace filter before heating season begins
  • Test all smoke and CO detectors
  • Drain and disconnect garden hoses and shut off exterior faucets

The Eugene-specific risks

Moss and algae growth

Pacific Northwest moisture accelerates moss growth on roofs and siding. Left unchecked, moss lifts shingles and traps moisture. Fall is the time to treat it before it spreads over winter.

Crawl space moisture

Many Eugene homes have crawl spaces that flood or accumulate moisture during rainy season. A good vapor barrier and working vents are non-negotiable.

Foundation drainage

Clay-heavy Willamette Valley soil doesn't drain well. Water that pools near the foundation during heavy rain has nowhere to go — and eventually goes inside.
